Meet the Author
I had certainly tasted Scotch whisky before my mid-forties, but I cannot say that I truly appreciated it.
That began to change during the years when Christine and I traveled regularly to Australia to visit her mother. My mother-in-law, Sylvia White Harrison — known to family and friends as “Syl” — was originally from Newcastle upon Tyne and a graduate of the University of Durham in 1945. Raised with strong Scottish influences, she possessed both a taste for and a deep appreciation of fine malt whisky. Observing her reverence for tradition and quality sparked something in me. What had once been merely a drink began to feel like an invitation into a richer story.
That invitation deepened during a holiday in Perthshire, Scotland, when Christine and I climbed Ben Vrackie. The five- to six-mile hike carried us across open moorland, past a quiet loch, and up a final steep ascent often referred to as the “stairway to hell.” The last two hundred feet felt like climbing the stairs of a skyscraper.
Standing at the summit, surrounded by sweeping views of Highland lochs, glens, and mountains, I felt a profound connection to the land that gives Scotch whisky its character. In that moment, whisky ceased to be simply something to taste. It became an expression of place, history, craftsmanship, and time.
Becoming a Scotch Connoisseur grew out of that journey — from curiosity to appreciation, and from appreciation to understanding. I invite you to walk that path with me.
